I just got it for iPhone 6 and it works well. The only negative is that the VM and other features could be better. I have a Comcast land line ($10 month to — unavoidably — rent voip capable modem) which includes an app for voice, VM, and text (all via wi-fi only) and it has a lot more features.
As far as Freedom Pop wanting access to contacts, I think that is normal and how smart phones and phone apps work. You can just tell your phone to "dial Mom" and it will dial mom!
If they keep improving the app, it would be nice.
